Sparta is both a region and a settlement. The settlement was never a city like Athens, but was a group of four scattered villages. It is situated in the northern part of the River Eurotas valley in the south-east Peloponnese called Laconia or Lacedaemon.
The Eurotas valley is fertile, but relatively narrow, enclosed by the steep mountain barriers of Parnon to the east and Taygetus to the West.
The first settlers were perhaps the Dorian Greeks during the tenth century. By early in the seventh century all Laconia had first been secured, as well as the Parnon range and the territory south of it down to Cape Malea.
Sparta didn't build walls for its settlement until the 2nd century AD. Why do you think this was?
